For travelers in Dallas, navigating airport options can sometimes be confusing, especially when it comes to Southwest Airlines. Historically, Southwest has been synonymous with Dallas Love Field (DAL). But with the sprawling Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) also serving the metroplex, a common question arises: Does Southwest fly out of DFW Airport? The answer, while currently no, is rooted in history, legal frameworks, and strategic airline decisions, with potential shifts on the horizon.
The Wright Amendment and Love Field Legacy
To understand why Southwest Airlines primarily operates out of Dallas Love Field and not DFW, it’s crucial to delve into the history of Dallas aviation and the Wright Amendment of 1979. For Southwest, maintaining their strong position at Love Field remains the immediate priority before any significant expansion at DFW is considered.

For Dallas travelers, the current reality is that if you’re flying Southwest Airlines, you will almost certainly be flying out of Dallas Love Field. DFW remains a hub primarily for American Airlines and other international carriers.

However, for the immediate future, and certainly until 2025 and beyond, Dallas Love Field remains the central hub for Southwest Airlines in North Texas.
