Minecraft offers vast worlds to explore, and traversing them on foot can be time-consuming. Fortunately, the game provides methods for flight, making exploration faster and more efficient. While Creative mode offers instant flight, Survival mode requires a bit more effort and skill. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know about flying in Minecraft Survival mode, allowing you to soar through the skies and reach new heights in your adventures.
Mastering Flight in Creative and Spectator Modes
For players in Creative or Spectator modes, flight is readily accessible and straightforward. These modes grant you god-like abilities within the game, including the power of flight from the start.
Initiating flight in Creative or Spectator mode is as simple as double-tapping the jump button. On most computers, this is the spacebar. Once airborne, you can control your ascent and descent with ease.
To ascend, simply press and hold the jump button. Conversely, holding the crouch button will cause you to descend. For quicker travel, you can also hold the sprint button while flying to significantly increase your speed.
To disengage flight, double-tap the jump button once more. In Creative or Spectator mode, falls from any height are harmless, so you don’t need to worry about fall damage. However, be cautious of falling into the void, such as the spaces between islands in The End dimension, as this will still result in death and respawn.
Achieving Flight in Survival Mode with Elytra
For players seeking a more challenging and rewarding experience, Survival mode offers flight through the use of a special item called Elytra. Obtaining Elytra requires venturing into the dangerous End dimension and overcoming significant challenges, but the reward of soaring through the sky in Survival mode is well worth the effort.
Locating and Obtaining Elytra
Elytra are a rare item found exclusively within End Ships. End Ships are structures that generate in the outer islands of The End dimension, which is accessed after defeating the Ender Dragon in the main End island.
Each time you defeat the Ender Dragon, two gateways will appear. One gateway leads to the end credits and then back to the Overworld. The other gateway teleports you to the outer End islands, where End Cities and End Ships can be found.

To reach these outer islands, you’ll need to travel through the newly created gateway by throwing an Ender Pearl into it. This will teleport you to a new area of The End, where you can begin your search for an End City and its elusive End Ship.
Alternatively, for players who prefer a less combat-focused approach or who are not yet ready to face the Ender Dragon, it is possible to build a bridge from the main End island to the outer islands. However, this is a monumental undertaking, as the distance can be over 1000 blocks, requiring vast amounts of resources and time. If you choose this method, setting a spawn point near the End portal using a bed is highly recommended to mitigate the risk of death from falling into the void during construction.
End Cities are the primary location for End Ships. Not every End City will have a ship, but roughly half of them do. When exploring an End City, keep an eye out for a floating ship docked nearby.

Once you locate an End Ship, board it and navigate to a level constructed with black Obsidian blocks. Here, you will find the Elytra displayed in an item frame. The Elytra is typically flanked by two chests containing valuable loot and guarded by a Shulker.
To claim the Elytra, simply break the item frame. While defeating the Shulker is not strictly necessary, doing so will make looting the chests and obtaining the Elytra much easier and safer.

Utilizing Elytra for Flight
Flying with Elytra in Survival mode is a unique experience, distinct from Creative mode flight. Elytra essentially allow you to glide, not fly upwards indefinitely. However, with the clever use of fireworks, you can effectively extend your flight duration and even gain altitude.
To equip the Elytra, place them in your character’s chestplate armor slot. To initiate flight, you need to be at a high elevation. Jump off a высокое place and press the jump key once while falling to deploy the Elytra and begin gliding.
When gliding with Elytra, it’s important to consider in-game physics. Steep gliding angles can cause you to stall and lose lift, leading to a fall. Similarly, colliding with terrain or structures at high speeds can result in significant damage or even death.
As you glide, you’ll notice your character’s legs begin to wobble or flail. This visual cue indicates that you are losing altitude. If you wish to maintain or gain height, equip fireworks in your hotbar and use them while gliding. Using a firework rocket provides a substantial speed boost and propels you upwards, allowing for extended flight. By strategically using fireworks, you can theoretically fly for as long as you have rockets available.

It’s important to note that Elytra have durability. Flying and taking damage while wearing Elytra will reduce their durability. To repair Elytra, you can use an anvil to combine them with phantom membranes, which are dropped by Phantoms. Alternatively, you can combine two damaged Elytra at an anvil to repair them, sacrificing one to repair the other.
By mastering the use of Elytra and fireworks, you can become a proficient flyer in Minecraft Survival mode, opening up new possibilities for exploration, travel, and adventure within your Minecraft world.
