When Sparks Fly Book Review: Get Ready for a Fiery Friends-to-Lovers Romance

If you’re craving a romance novel that’s equal parts sexy, emotional, and angsty, then look no further. “When Sparks Fly Book” is the friends-to-lovers story you need to dive into right now. From the moment I started reading, I was completely hooked. The premise alone – college friends turned roommates with years of unresolved feelings – is incredibly enticing. I devoured this book in one sitting, my heart racing from the intense chemistry between the characters.

Avery and Declan are clearly meant to be together. Their connection is palpable from the very beginning. However, like any great romance, there are obstacles in their path. Underlying issues and unspoken truths prevent them from taking that crucial first step, forcing them to suppress their feelings for years.

In the past, Avery dated Declan’s friend, Sam, precisely because Declan was perceived as commitment-phobic. Declan, burdened by his parents’ troubled relationship, seemed like the less complicated choice. But when Sam proves to be unfaithful, it’s Declan who steps up to support Avery, ending his friendship with Sam in the process. Now, as they approach their thirties, their dynamic is complex and layered. Avery is the owner of Spark House, a hotel and event center she inherited after tragically losing her family in a car accident as a teenager. She runs this business with her sisters, London and Harley. Despite harboring deep feelings for Declan, her best friend and business partner, Avery hesitates to cross the line. She cherishes their friendship too much and fears rejection, believing her feelings might be one-sided.

What Avery doesn’t realize is that Declan reciprocates those feelings just as intensely.

Initially, I’ll admit, Declan frustrated me immensely. He definitely earns some serious demerit points early on. Before an alumni gathering trip they planned to take together in his SUV, Declan makes a questionable decision. Jealous and insecure after seeing Avery dressed up for a date, he goes to a bar and brings home a random woman. (While his jealousy is understandable, his actions are undeniably inconsiderate!) The next morning, Avery is pounding on his door, only to find him hungover and still with this woman. To make matters worse, he’d left his car downtown and can’t even give Avery the keys.

This leaves Avery no choice but to drive her own, less reliable car in the pouring rain. It’s important to remember that Avery is terrified of driving in such conditions due to the trauma of losing her family in a car accident. Declan, at this point, is undeniably in the wrong.

Declan, to his credit, is immediately remorseful. He calls Avery, and during their conversation, he becomes a horrified witness as a white van harasses her on the road, culminating in a devastating car accident. Declan stays on the phone, directing paramedics to her location, relaying crucial information about her pre-existing health conditions, and simultaneously contacting her sisters. Landon, understandably distraught, unleashes her anger and blame on him.

Thankfully, Avery survives, though she sustains serious injuries: a broken leg, arm, and several ribs, significantly impacting her mobility. Overwhelmed with guilt and genuine care, Declan becomes her constant caregiver, showering her with apologies and unwavering support. He transforms into her devoted nurse, never leaving her side.

It’s during this period of caregiving that Declan truly redeems himself. His actions speak volumes, and it becomes impossible to hold onto the initial frustration. In fact, I started to feel a degree of sympathy for him, albeit a small one at first.

However, when Declan’s nursing duties extend to providing ahem more intimate forms of care… well, things escalate quickly and become incredibly steamy! Let’s just say I was grateful to be holding a digital reader, because if I had been reading a paperback, those intensely passionate chapters might have set the pages ablaze!

I might have revealed a bit too much, but trust me, it’s worth it. I adored the sports-related hobbies of the main characters, which reminded me of the author’s “Pucked” series. Their close-knit group of friends also gave me “New Girl” vibes. As for supporting characters, London was a standout for me – a fiercely loyal, genuine, and badass sister. I would absolutely love to read a book centered around her.

Overall, the emotional depth of “When Sparks Fly book” is exceptional. The chemistry between Avery and Declan is explosive. Both main characters are incredibly likable (yes, I eventually forgave Declan! His groveling was effective!). And the ending was both sweet and satisfyingly smart. I’m rounding up my rating of 4.5 stars to a solid 5. This was exactly the captivating, sexy romance I’d been searching for!

In my opinion, this is Melanie Harlow’s best work to date.

Special thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Griffin for providing me with an advance digital copy in exchange for my honest review.
