Red wine is surprisingly effective at eliminating fruit flies. Pour red wine into a glass (about 1/4 to 1/2 full), cover it with plastic wrap, and poke small holes in the wrap with a toothpick. Place the glass near fruit or other areas where fruit flies congregate. The sweet scent attracts the flies, they enter through the holes, and then become trapped. They either drown in the wine or are unable to find their way back out.
This method often works better than the common apple cider vinegar and dish soap trap. The strong aroma of red wine is highly alluring to fruit flies. Multiple traps can be placed around the kitchen for a larger infestation. For example, placing three traps near a fruit fly swarm resulted in dozens of trapped flies within a short time, significantly reducing the infestation. This simple solution can effectively clear your kitchen of these pesky insects.
